Fibre-optics in RTL data centre by Amptec fbroptx
16-12-2024To modernise its TV platform, RTL Belgium switched to an IP infrastructure in their new data centre. The first phase of the integration was entrusted to Amptec. We handled the selection of appropriate partners for electrical systems and racks, designed and installed the cabling, and provided overall project management.

The role of fibre
The construction of RTLHouse's new data centre required building a new cabling infrastructure, connecting various technical areas in the building to the data centre. RTL’s Thierry Peters understood that fibre was essential for such a modern network. As a result, RTL began searching for a skilled supplier of fibre connections.
"About eight years ago, I attended a workshop on fibre at Amptec and discovered their expertise and specialised resources for this technology. We decided to engage them for the data centre project," explained Thierry Peters. "At Amptec, we've been selling, installing, and repairing fibre-optic cabling for many years," confirmed Jasper Willems, project manager at Amptec.
Fibre optics for studio cameras
From the design phase to implementation, Amptec provided tailored solutions for the project. Thierry Peters said, "They found technical solutions that suited our operations, especially for the fibre-optic connection of the studio cameras."
"We installed customised SMPTE 2110 camera cables from Canare and created the corresponding connection panels," added Jasper Willems.
“We started using the new infrastructure last summer and are very pleased with Amptec's work. They successfully met our technology, budget, and timing requirements.”
A comprehensive partner
RTL Belgium worked with Amptec as a general partner, managing every phase of the project, coordinating multiple teams and suppliers. Amptec connx supplied the racks and cabling, while fbroptx took care of the fibre-optic cabling and connections. In a third phase, Amptec ntwrx will handle the network, after which RTL will start the migration to the new data centre.
For Thierry Peters, efficiency and speed were critical in coordinating such a large-scale project. Amptec more than met these expectations: "The teams completed their tasks discreetly and efficiently, without disrupting daily activities.
