DPA d:facto II, designing the polar pattern
Firstly, we want to give you some insight in developing the d:facto II handheld microphone, more specifically the polar pattern design.
Pictured below are the theoretical standard cardioid and super cardioid polar patterns.
A cardioid microphone has maximum rejection at 180° off-axis, and a coverage angle of around 130° at the front side. Side rejection at 90° is 6dB compared to the front side. Note the two back lobes at the rear, which are a lot bigger than on a supercardioid.
A supercardioid microphone has maximum rejection at 135° off-axis, and a coverage angle of around 115° at the front side. Side rejection at 90° is -9dB. Note the much higher sensitivity at 180° due to the back lobe, about 12dB down compared to the front.
When designing the DPA d:facto II, the goal was to use the best of both the cardioid and supercardioid patterns, to obtain some kind of ‘optimized’ supercardioid pattern.
The end result looks like this:
Let’s do a comparison between the DPA 4011 cardioid and the d:facto II (4018V):
The opening angle at the front side is identical, although you would expect a more narrow angle from a supercardiod. Also the back lobe was greatly reduced compared to a ‘standard’ supercardioid microphone.
Another best-of-both-worlds result were the back lobes, as pictured here:
The end-result, our ‘optimized’ supercardioid, has the same opening angle as a cardioid, but better rejection at the rear side, while minimizing the unwanted rear lobe supercardioids typically have.
DPA d:vote touring kits
DPA released these week 4 different touring kits. Each kit consists of 4 or 10 d:vote clip-on instrument microphones, with a variety of clamps to suit every need. All packaged safely in a professional Peli case, the different kits are configured like this:
